Christine E. Murray, Ph.D., Founder of Start Here Counseling & Consulting, PLLC, counselor in North Carolina and Pennsyvania and consultant for nonprofit and social impact organzations
Hello!

I'm Christine Murray (she/her/hers), the Founder of Start Here Counseling & Consulting, PLLC. I'm on a mission to promote mental health, healthy relationships, and thriving communities.

I have over two decades of experience working in the mental health field. Based in Greensboro, North Carolina, I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) in North Carolina, as well as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in my home state of Pennsylvania.

Throughout my career, much of my work has focused on supporting survivors of domestic violence in the long-term recovery process and strengthening community response systems to better support victims and survivors as they move toward safety and healing.

As a survivor of past abuse myself, I bring my own lived experience to this work, including as Founder of The Source for Survivors resource and as Co-Founder of the See the Triumph campaign to end the stigma surrounding domestic violence.

Two of the books I’ve written, Triumph Over Abuse: Healing, Recovery, and Purpose after an Abusive Relationship, and The Verbal Abuse Recovery Workbook, are written for survivors to offer information and tools to support the abuse recovery process.

Beyond my work focusing on abuse recovery, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside a diverse network of community partners to address other crucial issues, including promoting healthy relationships and families, supporting early childhood development, fostering mental health, and preventing violence.

In addition to my work with Start Here Counseling & Consulting, PLLC, I am a Professor of Counseling in the
Townsend Institute for Leadership & Counseling at Concordia University Irvine.

In 2024, I retired as Professor Emerita from a 19-year career at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. From 2005-2024, I worked at UNC Greensboro (UNCG) as a Professor in the Department of Counseling and Educational Development, as well as served as the Director of the Center for Youth, Family, and Community Partnerships from 2019-2023.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my friends and family members--including my two teenage sons, being in the great outdoors, and staying active by walking, hiking, and working out.

Thank you for your interest in learning more about my work and Start Here Counseling & Consulting, PLLC!

Christine
